Training Programs

Firmly committed to internal training through our apprenticeship program, A. J. Pietsch also conducts a series of technical presentations, based on AWI training modules, for architects, general contractors, interior designers and other A/E professionals.  Many firms conduct “lunch ‘n’ learn” presentations that are oftentimes nothing more than a 45 minute “infomercial."

A. J. Pietsch, however, believes that conducting a technically competent, hard-hitting presentation – without the marketing slant – is one of the best ways to lend credibility to a firm’s expertise.

This is why the AIA has accredited our presentations, allowing attendees to apply the coursework toward Continuing Education requirements. A. J. Pietsch can provide the following presentations or we can create one especially for your firm.

Substrates, Veneers, Overlays and Panel Products

This presentation explores the materials of architectural woodwork, with emphasis on panel product core selection, fine hardwood veneers, and plastic laminate/melamine overlays. By the end of the presentation, participants will be familiar with a variety of panel products; understand core selection and performance; know the benefits of balance; and better understand the concept of “matching”. Approximately 1 hour.

Pitfalls to Avoid in Architectural Woodwork

This presentation focuses on common oversights involving architectural woodwork, including the specification stage, comparing subcontractors, veneers and paneling concerns, warping, installation issues, fast-track problems and other similar concerns involving woodwork. Approximately 1 hour.

Woodwork Quality Assurance: Controlling the Quality Process

In this presentation, participants learn to take control of woodwork quality through a better understanding of specifications and the cost-effectiveness of the AWI’s Quality Certification Program.  They will also leave the presentation with a sample Quality Assurance Specification guide.  Approximately 1 hour.

Architectural Cabinetry, Furniture and Fixtures

This presentation addresses issues surrounding architectural cabinetry. Participants learn to identify case parts and make design choices. Attendees also learn to identify cabinets by construction techniques and how to recognize construction details and joinery practices.  Finally, the topic of countertops is explored, including a variety of materials and design styles available.  Approximately 1.5 hours.

Introduction to Commercial Woodwork Finishing

Attendees study the effects of wood species selection and wood surface preparation as they relate to the appearance of the final finish.  They explore dyes, stains, wood fillers, toners, glazes and bleaches and learn about their effect.  Finally, participants leave the presentation with finish system selection guidelines and sample specifications for a variety of fine wood finishing solutions.  Approximately 1 hour.

Woodwork Design Solutions

For advanced attendees, this presentation focuses on the woodwork design process with special emphasis on concepts, language, drawings, specifications, samples and submittals.  The presentation also combines portions of other presentations and includes lecture, hands-on activities, with feedback and testing. Approximately 2 hours.
